Completely irrelevent to WoW I just want the communities opinion and/or advice. So its the end of the school year for me and i leave in a few weeks, on my last I.T class assignment we had to make a flash game. Everyone used tutorials from the net. Anyways, I simply found source code and changed the images. The game part was like 1/3 of the assignments grade the rest was the website it was on (i made this from scratch) and then the report etc and tutorial. So anyway I got an A all up and my friends are slightly pissy because i did better then them by only doing something easy and changing images etc (not sure if its 1/3 of marks or 1/2). I referenced the tutorial site so if anyone goes there e.g. moderators they will see that you can access source etc aswell as the tutorial (theyl of checked and i still got an A) I think they maybe thought I didnt use the source though as the images I have are 100% dif on everything and i changed the home screeen etc. So if my friends 'tell on me' do you think I could actually get in trouble and marked as an E grade ? or do you think they will acknowledge that I referenced etc.
Source-code is just a the outcome of a tutorial brought together. Most tutorials just split up the source and explain what every bit does, saves you from copying all those bits in one file. Imho, both following a tutorial or grabbing source from somewhere is quite lame, you're trying to learn something and you're not going to learn it that way. Whether you risk an E or not probably depends on the schools policies. If we copied any source from anywhere we risked getting expelled. (this includes copyrighted images)
Yes it was cheating. If you really have to ask that question, perhaps some nice ethics classes are in order.
Well, in creating a flash game you totally failed, becasue you didnt code anythign yourself, and im assuming that you just cut & pasted it. On the other hand, you did get the assignment done by hook or by crook and that is the end result. Out there in the big world they dont particularly care how you get your work done, just that it gets done. Of course, doing what you did can also land you in very hot water for plagerism. If you borrow code, credit the original writers. Like i said, i think you failed this test becasue you missed the point of learning to write a game in flash, so im with your friends on this one. To ease your conscience, do the assignment, without copying code, even if just to prove to yourself that you can do it.
Dude I always remember a great sentence in these kind of things. "It isn't cheating if you don't get caught". But you made a big mistake telling your buddies where you got that app. People tend to get butthurt or jealous when you do better than them.
To clear things up it was just a flash unit and we never have to do it again nor will I ever do it again for anything. Also we were alloud to use tutorials etc that wasnt an issue I simply used a tutorial except I downloaded the source code and rather than using the images provided and writing the same as them / doing the same as them from scratch i simply dloaded the flash file edited all the images and redid the load screens etc and main screen. This is simply a highschool assignment and yeah i think my mates were but hurt because they didnt think of that so to speak and only found tutorials that they had to manually rewrite lol. And yes ! i DID credit the original writer etc they are in my sources.
Since you're asking for opinions, I have a few words for you. You don't have to answer this to anyone but yourself, but do YOU feel like you cheated? Do YOU feel like you completed the assignment in the spirit in which it was assigned? It doesn't matter what we think, because you have to deal with your friends/teacher/etc. Just because you "never have to do it again" doesn't make a difference either way. It doesn't matter if the assignment was for high school, or a real world job. What matters is, did you learn what you think your teacher would have expected you to learn from completing this? If no, then redo it, even if it's just to prove that you can do it the correct way, to the "letter of the law". Then, you won't have any questions swirling around in your head about whether what you did was right or wrong. You'll know that you did it right, and not repeat the same mistake you made.
well to be honest i dont feel bad or anything as everyone used tutorials + like i said it was alloud. The only thing that concerns me is if my friends learn of my grade and its better then theres they might complain. I only have to make it 5 more weeks and im safe. The only that that bothered me was if i did get in trouble and failed.
if you want to work someday with flash coding for your living i suppose you cheated yourself, if you never want to work in that area who cares if you cheat.
Yes you cheated, yes you're a fool for telling your friends, yet it's doubtful anything will happen. If there's a tutorial for it, even if the source code is provided at the end, you can go ahead and claim you followed the tutorial and your source code was very similar, they can't argue. Also, if you're that worried, ddos the site every so often to get it down over the next few weeks. It's a little over the top, but, it gets the job done. Just tell the chinese it's GB's new auth site..
lol nope no interest in flash at all. It was our grade deciding assingment and in an IT class they drop Flash on us? it was a joke. Im moving overseas back to the U.K to move back in with my grandparents next year (was born there etc moved coutnry when i was like 10) and i need decent grades for college. I want to do networking and im doing college part time here in networking and i dont want flash to stop me from getting somewhere there. Yes i have to worry about my friends narcing they also narc on me for botting etc and purposely comment in game. for those who dont get what i mean. I basically dloaded the file and changed all the images. if i dindt do that and did it legit id of been doing pretty much the same but it would of taken more time and it would of been each section individually. I dont feel like i cheated that much as i still put work into the gui the char images etc and the manual and other work i simply used a premade source code / game. rather than the from scratch steps
Since it was allowed to use tutorials etc. I see no reason why you should be in trouble. The only thing is that you probably didn't learn much (if anything). But yeah, my 2c.
Sounds more like he just put the game thru a Expansion sort of like blizz does.. take old code, change some images and pow.. a new version and charge more money
