Before i get a load of rude comments to this post, just don't bother. This is supposed to be a helpful post for people. Some people do not know how to do this and i thought it would be nice to share. Also what else am i going to do,, wow is BROKEN (lol i have actually stopped playing now because i dont have a bot!!) _____________________________________________ Hey guys, so have you had your computer for a while now? Is it starting to slow down a bit? Thinking of buying a new computer? Before you do I just want to share this with you. A lot of people already know about it but id like to tell you what it is and how to do it. _____________________________________________ What is it: Picture your computers hard drive as a big drawer of Video Tapes. These video tapes are all of your computers files. Imagine if you had a song on one of these tapes, it is to big to be stored on just one tape, so part 1 is recorded on the first tape and part 2 is recorded on the second tape. What happens with fragmentation is that these two separate tapes are just randomly put into the drawer in any place (its a lot more complicated than that but i wont go into detail). If you wanted to play this song you would have to be looking all through the drawer for each different tape. What defragmentation does is that it re-organises all of your little tapes (files) into order so when you need to open the file they are all next to each other so it is quicker to access. This will not make your computer FASTER exactly, it will just put it back to the speed it was when you bought the computer (before all the fragmentation). If you download lots of files and install lots of junk, this should be done more often! Or if you just brose internet pages you should only use it once every few months. _____________________________________________ How to: Windows 7 + Windows Vista: Step 1: Press the little button on your keyboard that looks like a flag! Or you can click on the little flag in the bottom left corner of your screen. Step 2: When the menu opens up type "defrag" into the search box. Step 3: Click on "Disk Defragmenter" like in the picture below. Step 4: In the window that opens up click on the disc (number 1 in the photo). If you have more than one disc, Click on the top disc (number 1) and then press the shift key on your keyboard and then click on the bottom disc (number 2). They should then all be highlighted in blue ! Step 5: Click on defragment disk (number 3). Step 6: Wait,,,, If your disk is very fragmented this will take a LONG time (few hours) but I think on average it will take from 10-20 minutes. Step 7: Configuring a schedule? If you would like to set this up to do it automatically keep reading below. I suggest you do this so you dont have to keep remembering. First click on the Configure Schedule button. In the window that opens up you may be wondering which settings to put in. I will try explain them. Frequency : How often? If you download a lot, once a week if you dont download a lot once a month. Day : The day you are most likely to have your computer turned on (doesnt work if its turned off lol) Time: I put mine at 6am (even though it doesnt show in the photo) as i leave my PC on 24/7 (how do u like that eco-activists!) but if you dont do this set it to a time when you are likely to be on the pc, like 8pm or something. Windows 7 guide complete! If you have any questions just pm me or write a post. _____________________________________________ {work in progress}
nice tutorial, you could add that this is only important for common ide / sata / ... drives and NOT for SSD, as it reduces the lifetime of a ssd and is not necessary.
ya DO NOT DO THAT WITH SSD there are extra "defragmention" tools for SSD - SSDs do not need to be defragmented but cleaned up
Yes that is true, but i think anyone that does have a SSD will already know a lot about computers and will understand that you shouldn't de fragment them. I do believe it shortens the life time of ur ssd.
Every write action shortens your Life with a SSD and every other Flash drive.. see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory#Write_Endurance
This, plus I'd recommend using "Defraggler" because it's better, plus you can schedule it to defrag while you aren't at your computer, so you can sit down and use it, and the drive is already defragged. Thanks for posting.
