nah, its a legit prosthesis. made with the same material dentists use for replacement teeth. evisceration eye surgery - Vision Eye Centre - YouTube this is the surgery i had, and then the prosthesis is a scleral shell.

Our Process - How Custom Plastic Artificial Eyes are made the link is for the process, but the pic is an example of the scleral shell prosthetic. i can wear it for up to 5 years with twice yearly polishing. the white part is made up of the same material used to make denture teeth, then encapsulated in clear acrylic for the wear layer. the actual paint is under the clear acrylic. here is the pic of the matching eye done by the artist. cant tell the difference without knowing first. since we were able to save the sclera and attached muscles, my fake eye tracks with my good eye.
