Man-in-the-middle goes a bit further than snagging plaintext over wifi. In the case of an onion router, there are many more opportunities to exploit a man-in-the-middle drop. So for all intents and purposes, when using an onion router, there is a degree of certainty that encryption is beneficial.

There's no 100% effective solution in redirecting one's traffic, one might feel comfortable behind a veepeeen shurb, but when one turns around, there's a dozen other botters hiding behind the same shrub. Same applies to onion routers. You're better of in the long run, to use your own, and if you think you got flagged by IP, call your ISP and ask for a release/renew, might take a few calls, but eventually they will give you a different IP.
