Lets face it . subscription based models aka wow sucks . not because of the price , but because you have to pay a monthly fee and get nothing in return (apart from access to the servers ) . not currency no advantage no nothing .
and many feel cheated for a good reason simply because sometimes you don't have time to play as much as you wanted to and your subscription simply expires

The challenge with this model is not becoming a pay to win model . (at least not directly from the game company as there will always be the blackmarkets ) because the p2w model simply discourages peps from playing when you could simply buy what you need from the game shop.

Another mmo following the model of many others and going f2p :
RIFT? | RIFT Free-to-Play - No trials. No tricks. No traps. | RIFT MMORPG

Arguably the main reason of all of them having to go f2p is because they are wow clones or simply not good enough however me thinks there are many reasons for which the f2p model is more advantageous.

With Rift going F2P, maybe it would be good too bring back the rift bot? Or was Tirions detection too good that its not worth making one? All i remember is nearly everyone being banned for botting then the buddy team decided it wasn't worth the time :p

F2P = Pay to Win. No incentive to bot the game when it's cheaper to buy from microtransaction shop instead.

not necessarily . wow has that thingy that you can buy with cash and and sell for gold (a lot of gold) and it is still botable
a correctly implemented f2p model as in not p2w has more potential for both botting and profits for the company because peps could spend potentially more than a simple sub (if they really like the game)

diablo for example is both p2w and not p2w :) . p2w because you can buy gear/gold for cash , not p2w because you don't find that gear otherwise (even the new crafting for bis is still p2w because it uses gold (lots of it in same cases) that's why the scam with diablo3's end game around ah/rmah worked so well . the ah/rmah was a great idea but not how they implemented it - for example if u had the ability to trade for money only stuff that helps you or gives u an edge but that stuff is also not enough to make u win such as gems (which could've been made very difficult to make/obtain) and similar would;ve worked well ; and actually finding that great gear through an end game content

i'm actually still bewildered how could arenanet fk up gw2(which is similar to d3 pay once but they have a cash shop and no rmah) so badly which could've been 100 times better then diablo and 10 times better then wow ;on one hand they have great ideas and content (ok their only major design mistake was not implementing trinity and they came up with something called support , control and smth which is dog sht and obviously not working) but on the other hand they fk up a lot of important things such as classes (there's actually 1 class worth playing/not boring/with almost no useless skills and no coincidence that class is the class of choice for all the bots in gw2 :D ) questing , no lfg, and many others - they seem to be trying to improve..but..still far.

Alternative way F2P = Free To PAY, Im not using WoW bots, but playing WoT instead an using TankLeader there. It might not make money but it spare my time (and nerves) when it do low level grind.

And about F2P if its "Free To Pay or Pay To Win", as long its free I can allways jump next game and just buy new bot to spare my time(scary word for F2P devs, really scary...)

ps. just wondering to buy some new BF but its so annoying to start from bottom when you pay FULL prize, so I continue Wolfenstein The Original ;)...
