GTX460, new card, latest drivers, just kills it. Also kills my wifes PC and both kids laptops, almost unplayable on both of them, although they are 2 years old they run wow fine.

That is very weird G I can run 4 instances and still manage to play it as long as I tone some setting's down on it.

Ok, its not that Minecraft has good graphics, they are pretty terrible in fact (He's working on it). Even worse back in alpha though.
Its that it generates a world the likes of 7 times larger than our planet, or around that, give or take a few 100k sq miles.
The graphics card heating up is very weird, I'd look at drivers, settings, other stuff they have running at the same time. Never had problems with the graphics card on Minecraft.
Oh and I dont think the servers are working 100% yet, I know you can set them up, my friend in town has one, but sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesnt, and he has it online 24/7.
Google might work better for ya in finding one.

I wouldn't think it was driver related because on all 4 machines they are different brand cards with the latest drivers, I assumed the gfx drawing routines of the program were not as polished as they could be and causing the problems. I'll do some googling. But as soon as minecraft is loaded my GPU fan spins up a storm and my CPU temp climbs thru the roof.

Java is pretty intensive. About all it runs up to be.

I run a small minecraft server that just got reset, not keen on putting my IP on these boards though, PM me if interested, only about 4 people play there casually.
