I cannot get any plugins to show up in the plugins list in Honorbuddy. I download a plugin, extract it, and place the folder in the Plugins folder and recompile, right? In addition (and probably related to) this problem, ProfessionBuddy doesn't show up in my plugins any longer.

Tony not to step over you toes, that happens to me. Mine solution, do not recompile, just exit out all together from HB, if you have and restart. You will see your plugins. Again, it happened to me before and that has been my only solution.
looks like you are ovewriting your old Hb folder with the new files make a new Hb installation from scratch
